Final Project

I am making a large sized textured piece that is consumed with sticks, rocks, dirt, paint, and photographs. This textured piece will first be consumed with a layer of images of natural things on our planet such a wood, grass, trees, and dirt. Then I will add paint using colors that depict their realistic colors to the black and white photos. I will have the photographed images become apart of a 3d piece by corresponding the photographs with my gathered objects.

The nature relates to the photographs, which depicts my major and my specific area of concentration, nature photography. My idea of art is self- expression. I enjoy creating a piece that corresponds to my characteristics. In this piece it represents my inspiration for photography, which is nature. I also enjoy creating a unique way executing; this gives me ownership of my art.

When researching artist after I came up with my idea the closest artist that could relate with my project is Anslem Kiefer. Kiefer was a German painter and sculpture that was ranked the most successful German artists after World War II. His works are dull and musty looking and have a depressive and destructive style. “In most of his works, the use of photography as an output surface is prevalent and earth and other raw materials of nature are often incorporated.” His works are executed on large format scale.

Color Interaction

The color interation project was a good exercise on changing the perception of how a color looks. I was able to accomplish this change of perception by focusing on three aspects; value, color/subtraction, and compliments.

The seven pieces varied from being very challenging to easy to work with. For instance problem 3 was my biggest chalenge, it took me the longest to achieve getting the two colors in the middle to look alike. Problem 4 was the easiest challenge, where I simply focused on getting two color that constrasted with each other and are each others compliment. This however strained my eyes the most where I learned that by stairing at the small black dot in the middle for 30 seconds burns your retna. When you look at a white sheet of paper with a small black dot after the 30 seconds you will then see the outlining and color variation of your original piece.

I had no idea on the different ways of changing colors that tricks the human eye. I gained a deeper understanding of changing color perception, this is first step of mastering optical illusions. The Bezold effect is the perfect example that i worked on that creates an optical illusion. It was named after Wihelm von Bezold, a German proffesor of meterolog (Wikipedia).

Painting Reflective Object

I choose to paint the top of a pan considering that it was the best reflected object in my apartment. I enjoyed this project the most out of all the painting we have done this year. This was a fun challenging assignment that was based off preciseness. I further enjoyed the fact that we where to incorporate a still life object and then paint it's reflections. This assignment had more depth and learning to it.

I once did a project slightly similar to this my junior year in high school when I had to draw the reflections of a glass cup. We drew with a white colored pencil on a brown 8 X 10 sheet of construction paper. Both of these projects have one thing in common and that is focusing on light. In these two types of of objects, the top of pan and glass cup, light is reflected upon them where the piece for a still life becomes a lot more complex to draw. Practicing to draw still life's with reflected objects trains your eye to see the detailed imagery that light makes up in its reflections.

After completing this project I took with me the practices of drawing a proportional object, studying the light that is reflected upon its surface and technic when applying the different types of grays. The grey project was very fulfilling where a was able to get a lot of it, even though it was time consuming I did not mine because the outcome was interesting.

Grey

Mixing colors to get grey I believed only involved using whit and black. I was proved wrong when my first attempt to make grey was from the use of primary colors, the outcome was successful. Mixing the colors to get grey takes patience and accuracy. After mixing the colors and the applying it to the bristol the outcome was majority of the time a bit off then what was expected. This was not necessarily such a let down, it allowed me to gain a step closer to getting to the color grey by seeing what more of a color I needed to apply.

Throughout the process of mixing the colors I noticed that you where able to get closer to grey when you add white or you where able to notice what complimentary color you needed. When mixing my colors in compelled to receive the color grey I realized that the more I time I spent making the colors the more I thought it was easier to get grey. I was proved wrong on my last trial when I mixed Phthalocyann Blue with Raw Siena Trying to get a grey out of these two colors seemed to be impossible not matter how much white I added and its complementary color I added.

Making the Grey was a good experience since I have now learned that you don't only need black and white to make the color. I also found that you can have a variety of different types of grays depending on how much of the a complimentary color you apply. For instance when I thought I finally got my grey and then made another one, comparing the two next to each other they looked like two completely different colors but when singling them out they both looked grey.

The history of yellow goes into depth I will first begin with yellow sybolizing sunshine it is also a warm color that, like red. On the one hand it denotes happiness and joy but on the other hand yellow is the color of cowardice and deceit. Since yellow is very vibrant it is usaully used for hazordous signs and emergency veicles.

Yellow, most of the time works best as a compliment to other colors. You can use yellow for bright excitement and for the use of contrast. Yellow, unlike red and orange may be too strong or too dark. In astronomy the planet Saturn is yellowish, which is a class G star just like our sun. In calandars Monday is associated with yellow on the Thai solar calendar. Anyone born on a monday may adopt yellow as their color.

In cultures such as the enlish language yellow is associated with jaundice or cowardice. A coward in the American slag is reffereded as "yellowbellied". In Italy yellow represents crime stories from fictional and real stories. In 1930 the first series of crime novels was published with the book cover being yellow. Ethnicaly Asian people are sometimes known as the yellow race. Reffering to people of East Asia as the yellow race is now days offensive. In African- American slang "high yellow" is reffered to someone who is a very light-skinned African- American. This term was herd often in the 20th century but is now rarely herd these days. The color yellow has two different types of symbolisms one being of excitement and perkiness and the other of cowardness and crime.

The 9 thumbnails assignment had the most rewarding outcome. Since we previously had two projects that dealt with color I was more confident in mixing colors and applying them to the illustration board. I enjoyed the fact that we where to choose our own composition. This allowed us to create a unique piece that had a consistent fluent outcome.

This project involved lots of preciseness which made the work very tedious. When beginning the piece I felt a bit annoyed because of the tediousness although once I gave it 10 minutes of working I got used to it and enjoyed the painting. The painting was time consuming but relaxing.

I enjoyed the colors I produced because of the various tints I applied that gave the piece a more variety of color. The colors are different in this project because I was used to mixing by now and was able to create more unique colors and involving more tints. Yellow, which is my hue color is the only common color found in every box which unites the entire piece together. If I did not have the same hue color found in every 9 boxes than my outcome would look like a bunch of random colors and the piece would not be as strong.

Scale

The scale was more sophisticated and had more specific direction. I am glad I used my primary color as yellow. The yellow gave me contrast and its outcome gradually appeared as earth tones. It was frustrating in having to complete 27 rectangles of color at the time but when finishing I observed that it is better in having more color varies, in order to show the tones and tints compared with one another.

I have learned the differences you get with the use of one color when using the Monochrome method, which is the most enjoyable so far. I like this because I have fun with trying to be as precise as possible when controlling my tints, shades, and tones.

I know after reducing the analogous column it will appear to have the most color variation considering that I am able to select four different types of colors outside the color wheel. This will help me expand color use and see it compared to the primary color I used being yellow.

Color Wheel

The color wheel allowed me to see color change as a whole. I used primary colors that radiantly changed morphing into its neighbor. I enjoy using these paints because of the richness of and vibrant of the color and its thickness allowed me to apply the paint smoothly.

Making the color wheel was relaxing rather than tedious. I only got frustrated when the paint began to dry while I was still trying to apply more color. It reminded me of painting nails, if you add to many coats when the first to coats are starting to dry than the out come starts to look rough and or bumpy.

I enjoyed this assignment because I think it is important to learn the mixing of paints because painting is a hobby of mine. Understanding the various outcomes of colors you get from three primary colors and the use of applying tint shade and tone is fascinating.

Color

The photo of the Spider-Man and My Little Pony snack boxes are two great examples of using colors to advertise. The images are taken together to compare and contrast the two flamboyant colors. The boxes are similar in the way of trying to sell to the same age group from ages 6-12 with the use of blue for boys and pink for girls. This is a smart was of advertising to a little kid where they are even more susceptible to buying a product thats just based off its color. The representation of dark blue and red would make a boy feel more boyish and the pink and light yellow would make a girl feel more girlie. The advertiser is selling to a particular age group, children, where then its the child's job to sell to their parent. The colors are very saturated and lively making it an eye catcher.

The photo that represents chemicals is very much a contradiction to its point. Looking at the vibrant colors it appears to symbolize fun and a spontaneous attitude. The colors are elementary like and do not come close to representing toxic chemicals that are deadly. The bright colors do catch and appeal to the eye although it miss leads on what it stands for. When bright fun colors stand for toxic colors it can be very misleading especially for young kids and therefor be dangerous.

Christian Andersson's style of work is known to be very sophisticated. The surface of his art is expresses with a strikingly elegant way of execution, where his sculptural and installatory elements contain an aesthetic environment that provokes a seductive visual finish. He has mastered in integrating light and shadows, and surfaces such as mute, transparent, reflective, and fluorescent, this often serves in highlighting a theme that has been central through out art history.

"In the corner of the room a piece of space is enclosed behind a group of film-/photo-studio lights. The space holds what resembles a frozen moment in time; A brick seems to float in the air after bursting its way out from the wall. A hole is gaping in the wall behind the brick and debris are fixed in the air in front of it. The piece becomes a distant yet present collapse of structures. Maybe the structure of the wall is about to fall apart, and we’re watching the ignition spark of that very convergence. We also experience two different time modes colliding; Our real time is confronted with a still, or a motion too slow to follow.

1:1 borrows its language from a mix between classic museum dioramas used to mimic scenes from nature or history, and recent digital effects where the visual reality is further bent by presenting “impossible” pannings and split time lapses.

The brick and the splinters are painted styrofoam models suspended in invisible strings, often used by magicians to create “levitating” objects in card tricks, etc. The back wall with the hole is constructed using wood, plasterboard and styrofoam."

proposal

My performance consisted of writing down an emotion and sharing it with your partner by performing your partners emotion. It took place outside where the performers stepped 15 feet back and express their partners written emotion. I feel that this performance was successful and I liked the outcome I received from the Victor and Vicki. It allowed them to express what there partner was feeling or thinking 1 min prior to swapping the sheets of emotions. They seemed have fun and performed it as I expected.

Directions
1. Write an emotion on piece of paper
2. Fold up the sheet of paper
3. Go outside
4. Give your paper to your partner
5. Both you and your partner step back 15 steps
6. Open up the note and make that emotion
7. Performance is over when you both can see each other emotions

In response to Vicks performance I was not really clear on the concept of the performance. After the third time he explained the directions I realized that the simplicity of is was made it hard to comprehend. I had fun with ducking and clapping while not touching the wall. The idea did seem to be more creative then the actual performance.

The performance I performed from Vickies proposal had a much different concept than Vicks. The partners interacted with each other more creating a more emotional and authentic performance rather than just taking directions. I had to create a rhythm while doing crunches with my partner. It was fun new and a i had fun with exploring a different way to create a rhythm.

Fluxus

Fluxus is a network of artists, composers, and designers that blend different artistic media and disciplines in the 1960s. The media the artists use consit of visual art, music, literature, urban planning, architecture, and design. The word Fluxus originated from Latin which means "to flow". Fluxus was loosely organized by Maciunas. The community that was formed from this art period was small but formed into a global network of artists and composers who already where working artists before Maciunas met them.

Fluxus encouraged the "do it yourself method" where the artists preferred to work with any materials available. They either created there own work or collaborated with their colleagues. The fluxus style valued simplicity over complexity. Fluxus is similar to the earlier movement of Dada. Fluxux emphasized the concept of anti-art and took bigger risks of focusing over the seriousness of modern art just like Dada. Fluxus artists used their minimal performances to highlight their perceived connection with everyday objects. Fluxus art was usually presented in events which was defined as "the smallest unit of a situation. The events consisted of a minimal instruction allowing the event to be open to accidents and other sporadic outcomes.

There are four key factors that define the majority of the Fluxus work. First off Fluxus is an attitude where it does not stand as a movement or style. It is intermedia, the creators like to see what happens when they use different medias to intersect the piece. They use everyday objects that are found consisting of sounds, images, and texts to create a new combination of objects, sounds, and texts. The work is simple, the art is small, the performance is brief and the text is short. It is fun and humorous.

Playing with Behaviors of Everyday Laife

The performance that I experienced today was very interesting and exciting. I enjoyed this fun creative activity. My partner and I both responded the same way, a little confused but open to the idea. When Leslie made a face in her mirror I copied that face as best as possible as we both walked apart. By the time we got so far apart that we could barely see each other in our mirrors I was deeply interested. The fact that i was making eye contact with someone so far away from the point of view of standing 30ft away facing back to back looking in a mirror from behind, was fascinating. We both laughed at the fact we where performing such a new "out of the box" assignment. I did not know what to expect in this project since it was so new to me. I only expected the sensation of having fun. Although I did think the activity would last a bit longer.

The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even

From 1915 to 1923 Duchamp worked on creating The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even very carefully throughout the years. The piece was executed on two planes of glass using materials of lead foil, fuss wire, and dust. Duchamp made lots of notes and studies and complex theories about how the piece works. He published the notes and studies as The Green Box. The notes describe his piece depicting the "Bride", thats found in the upper panel, and her nine "Bachelors" found in a gathering in the lower panel around lots of mechanical devices having erratic encounters. The Bride is very mechanical looking like shadings of geometric forms. She is connected to her halo with a cloudy form stretching across the top. There is a chocolate grinder that contains three drum- like forms around a circular platform with three small legs that are supporting her structure. " The Large Glass is a picture of the unseen forces that shape human erotic activity- the realm of ego, desires, and other mysteries"(Stafford). Duchamp calls the boundary between the bride and her Bachelors "the garment of the bride" which might refer to her clothing but also to the boundary of her body. The Glider introduces chances where the bachelors slide back and forth between them and the Bride. The Scissors that are powered by two huge blades are for threatening the Eyewitnesses. Duchamps art is not simply interpreted considering the notes and diagrams he made for his project as a guidebook actually complicates it more. He describes elements that were not in the final version and don't seem to exist.

I appreciate the creativity, brilliance, and dedication that went into this piece. I find the piece so interesting that makes me find me find the artist more interesting. Yes the piece is complex and deep but that only reflects the artist mind which is now more interesting to me. I think anyone has the capacity of inventing a creative process like Duchamp you just have to have the patience and a really good since of realty to get abstract minded. It got the recognition because it was purely original and and complex. Duchamps piece can be looked at in several different ways, as for me I see this only being a visual interpretation of the human nature.

Pattern, repeated

Floor tiles, wall coverings, fabric prints and general ornaments all have one thing in common. They all seem to have patterns. These patterns range from simple, to complex.

Floor tiles are very simple patterns. They come mostly in a rectangular or square pattern but can be found in all sorts of colors. Fabric prints are more design like and can have extravagant patterns that tend to make me dizzy. Wall coverings range from all sorts of patterns. It can be modern, realistic, or abstract patterns that may consist of a composition or just design. General Ornaments is a design like print that can be very decorative. You can find this print on all sorts of items such as jewelry, ornaments, chandeliers and more. It can range from just a mark to a composition.

All of the patterns formed in the tiles, coverings, prints, and ornaments are consistent. They are repeated across their form, which is used for decoration in some manner. I seem to like the fabric prints out of the types. The prints on the fabric are more design like modern and funky. They seem to be newer and can be used for more up to date things.

Value

Creating the scale allowed me to be structured and accurate. I had make sure my colors were not gradient and keep the scale looking constant. I went from dark to light in a curved shape. Making the drawing had more excitement to it. I liked how you were able to create your own composition. This piece was more interesting and fun because you were able to put more creativity into to it.

Lines, Shapes, and String Activity

The lines activity was a creative new project for me to do. I liked creating the four pages of continues line from a straight line to organic. The project aloud an amount of freedom that allowed you to use your creativity. It was basic and yet you could make it as complex as you wanted. I began drawing my lines without thinking. The moment I started my line I aloud the movement in my arms and hand lead the direction of my line. When putting all the pages together the outcome looked different considering in turned into one piece rather than four. I liked the outcome but if I were to do it again I would do it differently because I would want something new.

The string activity was new and exciting. Getting to string up your entire classroom for fun was something I never have done before. I like the way it allowed the students to work together and the idea that we where doing something complex. The outcome looked overwhelming and chaotic. Just like the line project I did not think or plane the outcome I allowed my motions to control what my outcome would be. This allows a more surprising unpredictable ending. I liked how the project was huge and brought out an emotion of extremeness. It was a light and fun activity that had a rewarding outcome.

Line>Shape

What makes a line? Line is a continuous stable mark that is endless. A line can be in all forms of distance.

What makes a Shape? A shape is a solid form that is a contained object. It is a complete definite form.

Stillness and Movement

This piece of art work has lots of straight lines. These lines are drawn with a straight edge from graphite. It looks like a plan for a building or house. The lines are in the background going diagonal, vertical, horizontal with two grids located in the middle. On top of the precise neat lines is an explosion of movement going in all different directions that covers the middle area of the art work. There are random darker streaks of swirls scattered across the piece. The art work is manly black, grey, white, with a little orange.

This work reflects two sides to the artist. First it shows he or she is precise and organized when drawing out the individual lines. The chaotic explosion on top of the lines shows lots of movement. The artist put in lots of movement and stillness into his work to give off two extreme emotions. This creates a even more intense emotion when combined, almost bipolar like.

The energetic area of the piece has nice value where there is more contrast. This gives the picture more depth and intensity. I like this piece because there are two emotions pulled out of me which are completely opposite and yet compatible. I like that it is extreme with out the use of colors. I think the artist wanted an intense outcome but yet he wanted it to be simple by only using two motions, stillness and movement.
